Award Nomination Guidelines


Nomination Criteria:  What Does It Mean?


The following guidelines are intended to “unpack” the nomination criteria and assist you in writing the application.  Remember:


  1. The narrative can only to 2 pages long;

  2. The font must be 12 point;

  3. Be concise. You will only have a few sentences for each criterion.

Criterion 1: Please describe how the nominee promotes the success of all students through a shared vision of learning that is supported by the school community.

Key Concept:


  • Having and communicating a vision for the success of all students.


Key Question(s):


  • How does the nominee demonstrate that s/he holds a belief in the success of all students?

  • How does the nominee communicate this vision/belief to all staff (including yard duty, instructional aides, teachers, office, transportation, site council, parents, etc.)?

Criterion 2:  Please describe how the nominee promotes the success of all students by advocating and supporting a school culture and instructional program conducive to (focused on) student learning and staff professional growth.

Key Concept:


  • Student Learning/Alignment of resources to support student/staff learning.  


Key Question:


  • How does the nominee align resources, staff development, goals, school mission, LEA Plan, Site Plan, etc. to support student learning?


Criterion 3:  Please describe how the nominee promotes the success of all students by providing a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment.

Key Concept:


  • Safety


Key Question:


  • How does the nominee ensure the school environment is safe, friendly, welcoming, orderly, and emotional safe? (Anti-bullying programs, safety plans, emergency plans, clean safe facilities, comprehensive district safety plan, etc.)


Criterion 4:  Please describe how the nominee promotes the success of all students by collaborating with families and diverse segments of the community to effectively mobilize resources.

Key Concept:


  • Community Resources/Bringing family into the school community.


Key Question:


  • How does the nominee work with the community to provide resources/programs/activities that involve parents and family in student learning)?  (Partnerships, local groups, Literacy Nights, Science Nights, etc.)?

Criterion 5:  Please describe how the nominee promotes the success of all students by modeling a personal code of ethics and developing leadership capacity?

Key Concept:


  • Leadership Development of Staff


Key Question:


  • How does the nominee promote the professional growth and cultural proficiency of others?  Provide evidence (examples) of the nominee’s integrity and character.

Criterion 6:  Please describe how the nominee promotes the success of all students by proactively supporting public education through political and community advocacy?

Key Concept:


  • Politics/Promotion of Public Education


Key Questions:


  • Is the nominee a good model of a public education employee?  

  • To what groups does s/he belong (community groups, service clubs, church, etc).

  • What does the nominee do to promote public education?

Criteria 7:  Summarize the nominee’s involvement with education.  Consider including the following (may also attach a resume):

  • Positions and length of service

  • Memberships, and offices in professional organizations

  • Publications/presentations

  • Community leadership


Much of this information can be obtained at the district office, by talking to the superintendent, principal, or the nominee’s colleagues. If the nominee’s application will be forwarded to State ACSA once they have won the Region 7 award, meet with the nominee to fill in the information that is missing.
