 Meeting Summary - ACSA Educational Options Council - September 8,  2017

The meeting opened with an inspiring resource that colleagues might bring to their own sites: consider using the video or re-enacting The team reviewed the council’s goals and encouraged all colleagues to be ready with an “elevator speech” on the work of alternative education.

CDE representatives Cindy Kazanis and Jenny Singh sought input and provided insights into the Dashboard and their emerging approach for the inclusion of alternative measures and the Dashboard’s “three by five” format for some small population (n size under 150 in an indicator) reports. Dashboard Alternative Schools Status (DASS) replaces ASAM, and schools with a high percentage of “high risk” students qualify. Particularly small schools/districts were overrepresented in the “red” and “blue” due to sample size, and the change under consideration to a three-by-five report is designed to reduce that anomaly. Examples of alternative indicators under consideration and that the State Indicators Subcommittee supports: a one-year graduation rate to be used in place of the four-year cohort graduation rate; those counted as graduates changed to include those earning a regular diploma, an equivalency certificate, or a special education certificate. Feedback provided by the Council included recommendations that the CDE consider career measures like work experience, certifications or licensures, flexibility in defining career pathways, and consideration of grades of a “C” or better during alt ed enrollment, without regard to former work.

A best practice shared focused on aligning goals and outcomes among WASC, SPSA, and LCAP. Attaining WASC accreditation opens doors for students’ future access (e.g. military, higher education).
