Secondary Education Council January 14, 2016

  1. The council reviewed the new ACSA website: acsa.org. Current information on all topics related to education can be found here, as well as various ACSA points of interest. Region presidents may post to the State ACSA website calendar. To gain access go through Education Services or email Mary Gomes for access to the contact person.

  2. Legislation update: ESSA will go into place in 2017-18. The CA budget focus in education will be around early education. A continuation of the 9 billion dollar school bond is intended to be on the June ballot, however there is a concern by unions of it competing with the prop 30 extension. There are 70 new initiative approved for circulation, however only 5 are slated for June. Regarding food waste steaming from the nutrition initiative, national representatives shared food must not be thrown away. ACSA legislative advisors will continue to look into where the waste issue steam from. In the meantime one suggestion to combat waste is to place the discarded food in a share receptacle and reuse it or provide it to students in need.

  3. Professional Development: At the ACSA Leadership Summit CIF presented on Concussion and Title IX Equity. The Council reviewed Mr. Blake’s presentation and videos which can be found on the CIF website. The council reviewed Walkthrough resources such as a teacher developed visitation from, Marzano’s math practices, Standards for math practice, a book study on Lesson Rounds and a walkthrough rubric. The UC Davis math project and LMU math project were also discussed.

  4. Next meeting topics: Math placement Act, CTE, PE credit and plans 9-12, Cheer uniforms, and Expansion of Dual Immersion.
